Horrendous penalty decision turns game

Colin Staines’ tenure at Parms has been marked by his success in the Old Boys’ Cup, so a semi-final and the chance of another title in the competition looked enticing. Old Suttonians stood in their way, a team without a loss all season, but one that Parms beat with 10 men only last season. A strong side from the visitors saw a solid defensive display supplemented by a smattering of chances. Chris Scherer brought the ball down brilliantly with his chest, only to rush the shot somewhat and send the ball wide. Ron Odokonyero and skipper Gary Kirby stood firm with the superb Dan Hall just ahead of them, shielding and creating in equal measure. It was a long searching pass from Hall that found Mike Morgan unusually left alone by the home defence for once, an opportunity the striker took ruthlessly by tucking away the chance after a race away from Suttonians’ high line. Once ahead the visitors began to exert a greater control on proceedings, however the half was to end disappointingly for the East Londoners. The ref judged a point blank cross which struck Odokonyero on the arm to be worthy of a penalty, which Suttonians gleefully converted to equalise. The half seemed to have come at the wrong time for Parms, as their second half display became increasingly tepid, especially in comparison with their first half. In a game where few chances were created, Morgan, Moore and Scherer all found openings hard to come by, while Sami Bekir ran his heart out to no avail. Jaymie Reynolds had to save smartly with his legs to keep the score even, but eventually a scrappy effort was forced home to turn the game on its head. A third was added when a 25 yard screamer all but put the game to bed, a shot Reynolds could do nothing about, and the game was up for Parms. A few half chances presented themselves late on, but in truth the visitors rarely threatened the fight-back required having fallen behind. The message from the manager was simple; all eyes on the league and next weekend.
