Team is gaining momentum

Quietly, the sense of optimism that surrounded Douglas Eyre at the beginning of the season is creeping back in and with Parms sitting 2 points off the top, there is everything to play for. A hard working Grammarians team pressured every touch the home side had in the opening 45 minutes, but still found it hard to make any headway. The industrious Mike Morgan worked the space to lay off to Chris Scherer a long way out on the left; with no apparent danger the Grammarians defenders sat off, allowing Scherer the space to unleash a 30 year drive that veered over the 6”10 goalkeeper and found the top corner. A long throw knocked on by Morgan allowed Luke Moore to head his first goal of the season and gave Morgan his second assist, putting Parms in a strong position. Unfortunately, the home side failed to press home the advantage and a deflected effort seemed to put Grammarians back in the game as it finished 2-1 at half-time. A first half clean sheet would have definitely been merited as the imperious defensive pairing of Gary Kirby and Ronald Odokonyero won everything and Dan Hall swept up all in front of them. The second half onslaught from the visitors never materialised, however, as the home team stepped up the gears to a level that simply couldn’t be matched and several chances had already been spurned by the time substitute Sami Bekir calmly collected the ball on the edge of the area and dispatched it into the bottom corner to make the game safe. Bekir’s next contribution was to knock the ball over the top to tempt the goalkeeper out, but Morgan capped a hard working display by beating him to the ball and lifting it over him for his 13th goal of the season. Manager Colin Staines commented afterwards, “Although the first half was frustrating the second half was a pleasure to watch, we must keep it up next week against Woodhouseians”. Parms will go top for the Christmas break if they procure 3 points in Mill Hill next week.
