Unbeaten run extends to 8 after narrow win
It was a big test to see how OPFC 6ths performed in this one given that they were missing Pearson and Heath, who between them have 23 goals this season, and in truth we took a bit of time to get going in this game, despite Wood Green Old Boys starting with just ten men due to players failing to turn up. We were unlucky not to get to half-time in the lead though, creating a host of chances with Le Beau being particularly profligate up front and Faulkner also coming close only to see his controlled effort bounce off the crossbar. The opening goal of the game came soon after the second half, Wood Green, now operating at full capacity, delivered a superb early ball into the box in-between defence and goalkeeper, which was nodded in at the back post. We needed a response, and we got one, Faulkner taking the game by the scruff of the neck, robbing Wood Green of the ball high up the pitch and delivering a superb pass to Le Beau at the back post who this time cooly tucked the ball away on his weaker right foot. George should be commended for sticking at it and not shying away from the game after some uncharacteristic wasteful finishing early on. OPFC 6ths continued to look for the goal that would get them the win, Mulaney and Dolan in particular were looking threatening combining superbly down the left. The goal came from that man Faulkner, receiving the ball high up the pitch before unleashing an unstoppable curling twenty yard drive from left to right, leaving the keeper no chance. Some stalwart defending ensured that we came away with the three points, marshalled again by Pryor, B. Davies at right back put in a typically energetic performance, timing his tackles superbly throughout. A. Spencer made an excellent thirty minute contribution, showing some composed touches and almost making it 3-1, side footing a volley just over from close range after a fine passing move. Special mention to Luke showing a safe pair of hands in goal again.
