Emphatic return to form
After the travails of last week at Egbertians, where an organised display from a spirited Parms team saw them lose, was replaced this week by a patchy display that yielded a comfortable 5-0 victory. A first half performance that was filled with effort rather than class from the home team saw them toil against a hard working Ignatians team who tried to squeeze Parms as much as possible. The chances still came for Parms, as several presentable opportunities for Mike Morgan, Brendan Kelly and Chris Scherer came and went before Morgan’s deflected shot from a Luke Moore cross left Scherer with an easy finish. Scherer started higher up the pitch after Sami Bekir had pulled up in the warm up, leaving a later shuffle of the pack by manager Colin Staines. The second half saw an improvement as Parms started to pass the ball around much quicker and Morgan added a second when put through and finished with the help of touch from an Ignatians defender. Another solid performance at centre back from Ronald Odokonyero showed how his blossoming partnership with skipper Gary Kirby can provide a solid base for this team and the home goal rarely looked in any danger. Eventually, good work from Scherer and Morgan saw Adem Bekir with the space to release Nat Newman through on goal, whose chipped finish was delightful. Shortly afterwards Adam Newman made his first appearance after his long term groin injury, slotting in on the left wing for a cameo to hopefully alleviate some of Colin Staines’ injury problems. Nat Newman scored another goal following up on a Morgan shot spilled by the goalkeeper to add to the visitors’ woe, before completing a rare hat-trick with a long range blaster into the bottom corner. Colin Staines said he was glad to put last week’s defeat to bed, but Odokonyero commented after the victory that “we need to turn this place into a fortress if we’re going to challenge”. Parms now sit 5 points off the top with a game in hand, consistency will be key now.
