No mistake this time

After two excellent displays that didn’t produce victories, a dogged display characterised by effort rather than finesse put Parmiterians into the next round of the AFA Cup with a 5-1 victory. Brilliant strikes from Michael Doherty and left-back Lloyd Hallowell lit up an otherwise turgid affair in which Parms battled against the long ball and struggled to find fluency as Albanians closed down quickly. Albanians quickly established a lead from a corner, a free header at the near post giving the home team the lead and although Parms dominated possession they found it hard to get in behind their hosts, who defended deep. However, a Chris Staines penalty did see Parms draw level before half time, banishing the penalty shoot-out from last week to history. The second half saw Parms with even more dominance over the ball as skipper Gary Kirby dealt with every challenge aerially and on the ground. A pinpoint free-kick from Doherty saw Parms take the lead finally, with Brendan Kelly, playing higher up the pitch than normal, sweeping in a third to extend the lead. At which point Parms were able to relax a little as the result never looked in doubt after. Carl Staines added to his burgeoning assist rate for Mike Morgan, crossing in for the striker to head his 6th of the campaign. Kelly, Morgan and Carl Staines all missed good opportunities to register, before the former laid a ball to Hallowell on the edge of the area whose curling effort found the bottom corner to complete the rout.
