Cooking on gas

This weekend saw Old Ignatian visit, who had dropped down from the division above like Parms' last league opponents. The visitors showed why they were plying their trade a division above last season with a strong opening 15 minutes, using quick combinations to get in front of the Parms defence, but found it difficult to break beyond that last line, which was well marshalled by Chris Kane. The home side again used a solid defence against an early onslaught to grow into the game, as has been the pattern of their games this season, gradually getting Danny Isichei and skipper Chris Scherer up from full back to push their opponents back. Star man Charlie Heath was the man to unlock the Ignatian's defence on 17 minutes, when his slide rule pass found Mike Ramsay running beyond their back line, as he so often does. Ramsay then cooly sat the keeper down and rounded him to finish into the empty net. This then put Old Parmiterians in the driving seat, as they started to dominate possession and crucially press Old Ignatian into mistakes in the middle. Two galloping runs from Scherer from left back saw a cross just too far ahead of Heath and another that was controlled by the returning Josep Mari into Adem Bekir's path, but the keeper came out well to save. The pendulum swung the other way as the visitors hit the post and then got back on top in the lead up to half time, but without a goal to show for it. In another pattern that has developed so far this season the visitors came out and pressed high in the second half to try and strike early in the second half, which meant playing a high line. Although this is a risk when Heath is on the pitch, no one would have expected what happened next. From an Ignatian corner Scherer headed clear to Heath on the edge of the home penalty area, he proceeded to run the length of the pitch at break neck speed, beating four opponents on route to the keeper, who he rounded and scored. It was a moment of exceptional athleticism and skill, and put the home team firmly in the driving seat. A few minutes later Parms showed what they can do as a team, as Ramsay and Heath combined to play the overlapping Isichei onto the byline. He cutback to Atiba Jackson who opened his Parms account with a precise strike, capping an outstanding display. A sloppy goal conceded from a second ball at a corner did get Ignatian back into the game for a spell but Jackson marshalled midfield to block any progress. Superb team play saw Ramsay played onto the byline who rolled the ball across for Heath to tap in with Mo Camara queuing up behind him. Jackson then helped himself to an assist playing Heath in to slot past the onrushing keeper for a third hat-trick in three games. Parms were not finished there though, and in a goal that epitomised their attacking approach, left back Scherer played in centre back Will Lahti, whose excellent slipped through ball found Heath one-on-one. Heath's chipped finish was the audacious cherry on a very fine cake.
